Description Students will be able to independently perform communicative acts in English that demonstrate a highly developed sense of language awareness and a mastery of argumentation and effective social discourse.
Objectives The course aims to: - To develop verbal and reading skills of students - Improve the use of vocabulary learning strategies in reading - To learn how to write letters, reports and stories - To develop knowledge of lexical items including verbs and their rankings - To develop social interaction skills of students through learning how to start a conversation and give opinions
Course Outline

1Student Syllabi overview. General introductions. Language Learner Histories. Self-assessment of English language abilities. Review of grammar: basic sentence types in English.
2Preparation for academic study: Reading dictionaries and understanding short informative texts. Pre-writing and drafting strategies. Paraphrasing in titles. Continue review of basic sentence types.
3Note-taking and listening to a lecture for the main idea. Participating in a seminar discussion. Recognizing noun phrases. Using a monolingual dictionary. The grammar of be, have, and do.
4Understanding and extracting key information in textbooks. Writing a short description of visual information. The grammar of the present and future tenses.
5Note-taking abbreviations and symbols. Speaking in a seminar context. Recognizing key factual information in a lecture. Becoming familiar with academic vocabulary. Continue review of present and future tenses.
6Using adverbs to express stance in textbooks. Analyzing and writing topic sentences and adding supporting evidence. The grammar of the past and perfect tenses.
7Participating in a tutorial discussion. Recognizing the language for introducing main ideas and supporting evidence in lectures. Inferring meaning of unknown words in sentences. Review grammar of the past and the perfect.

9Writing essay introductions. Identifying the purpose and structure of a text. Paraphrasing: noun and verb transformations. The grammar of modal verbs.
10Note-taking using diagrams. Recognizing and practising signposting language in lectures. Vocabulary of classification and categorization. Continued study of modal verbs
11Analyzing and writing essay conclusions. Identifying cohesive language and hedging language in textbooks. The grammar of passives.
12Taking linear notes. Interpreting and discussing written feedback in a tutorial. Identifying spoken punctuation in lectures. Continue review of passives.
13Analyzing written descriptions of processes and writing a paragraph describing a process. Reading popular academic texts. The grammar of infinitives and -ing forms.
14Using notes on lectures to give detailed explanations. Giving a short poster presentation. Building word families through suffixes. Continue review of infinitives and -ing forms.
